Western Lake District
Whinlatter Forest

Whinlatter Forest is the oldest Forestry Commission plantation in Britain, whose first trees were planted in 1919. However, a large area remains open to both walkers and mountain bikers in the form of footpaths, way marked trails and a permanent orienteering course. There is also a visitor centre at the top of Whinlatter Pass, which demonstrates the works of the Forestry Commission. The location of this picture was taken near Spout Force – a 30ft waterfall gushing into a narrow rocky cleft.
