South Lakes
Kirkby Lonsdale - Devil's Bridge

Local folklore claims that Devil's Bridge was built by the devil himself, as the story goes, an old woman driving her flock across the river Lune at this point day after day was getting weary with the constant fight against the strong current, noticing this the devil built the bridge and offered to the let the old woman cross on a day when the river was in flood, but only in return for the soul of the next being to cross. Tired and confused the woman retreated and thought long and hard on her plight. Shortly after she returned to the bridge and threw a bread roll across which her trusty sheep dog ran after. The devil threw himself off the bridge having only received the soul of a dog and not the old woman.
