Whitehaven - Beacon Visitor Centre

Prior to the mid-17th century Whitehaven was a little known fishing village. Its importance became established during the 18th and 19th centuries due to the local rich coal and iron ore deposits and the subsequent development of the port. It quickly became the third busiest port in England. The town itself was the first post-medieval town in Britain to have been planned and still retains its orderly 18th century elegance.
