Western Lake District
Maryport - Fleming Square
Formally a market place, Fleming Square retains its 18th century character with its stone cobbled central square, surrounded by attractive Georgian and Victorian houses. The history of the town however extends way beyond this era; the Romans occupied this area and the site of their fort of Alauna can be made out nearby. This was an important link to coastal defences extending from Hadrian’s Wall to the north.
