Maryport - Elizabeth Dock
The town of Maryport was first ‘developed’ by Humphrey Senhouse, Lord of the Manor in around 1749. Named after his wife Mary, the town became an important port in the area – Elizabeth Dock, seen here, became the first of Cumberland’s non-tidal docks. The town was home to a number of well known seafarers including Fletcher Christian, of Mutiny of the Bounty fame and Thomas Henry Ismay, founder of the White Star shipping line, owners of the fateful Titanic.
