Birdoswald Roman Fort
Birdoswald Roman Fort was one of sixteen frontier forts on the Roman Wall. Later it also played its part in the notorious Border Raids when a ‘Bastle’ house was erected to protect the inhabitants from the notorious ‘Border Reiver families’. Originally the fort would have been home to legionnaires - professional Roman soldiers who built the 73 mile stretch of wall from Wallsend in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in the west.
